But that hasn't resulted in an increase of rationality, the converse in fact, we live in an age that is as superstitious as any that has ever existed.

Bang on. Turning away from traditional religious belief doesn't appear to me to be correlated with turning away from superstition in general - any gathering of hippies (a Green Party conference, eg) demonstrates quite clearly that other irrational beliefs fill the gap when religion is in retreat.Psycho Milthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00779500926576047736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38893560.post-50301034573348749172011-03-23T19:43:33.572+13:002011-03-23T19:43:33.572+13:00That would be very annoying. That would be very annoying.Lucia Mariahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10485990994973953860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38893560.post-88025076375411526542011-03-23T19:25:05.580+13:002011-03-23T19:25:05.580+13:00Just wrote a whole comment refuting that, which wa...Just wrote a whole comment refuting that, which was lost in transfer. The label is unimportant.

PZ Myers has a constructively critical post here: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2011/03/imagine_a_perfectly_spherical.php

One of his criticisms is that the "perceived utility" is not a parameter that can be independently measured, in other words for some reason during the Ottoman Empire this value would have been high if the Church was growing...you can't say that if life was hard for Christians therefore "u" is small.

The plain fact is that in the countries covered people feel that they don't get enough out of belief and worship and religion is in a (seemingly terminal) decline.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38893560.post-62991541934827676672011-03-23T11:22:54.753+13:002011-03-23T11:22:54.753+13:00Andrei,
