New Catholic Blessing for the Unborn Child

Catholic Bishops the US have formulated a Blessing for the unborn child.

Children in the womb will now be able to receive a special blessing from their parish priests following an overwhelming vote by the U.S. bishops in favor of the new blessing.

"The Blessing of a Child in the Womb" has been in the works for two years, but Bishop Michael Saltarelli noted at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon that, “happily it’s come to fruition at this time when I think it’s important to reaffirm and focus our attention on the life of the unborn.” The bishop’s remarks were apparently in reference to the recent election results and Cardinal George’s remarks on not giving any ground to those who insist that Catholics set their beliefs aside in public dialogue.

This is significant. There is a battle for the life of unborn children going on right now in the world (especially with the election of a pro-choice President in the US), and a blessing reminds people that unborn babies are present, no matter how small or hidden they are. If the Vatican approves the Blessing, it will be added to all English language blessings. I'm not sure what that means for NZ, but it would be cool if it could be made available here, too.

  4. You know Rex, I get all the comments on this site emailed to me. Even the ones that are deleted by the author. So I'm pretty sure that I know what other persona you use on this blog as two times you've made the same mistake now of logging on with your other id, deleting the comment and then posting again with "Rex".

I'm giving you a chance to either confess, or go away. Because if you ever post with either persona on this blog ever again without confessing - I will delete your comments, whatever they may be.

  5. I often wonder why catholics take such a stand on abortion

An acknowledgment of the sanctity of life and the innocence of the unborn.

and why they feel compelled to impose their beliefs, their unfounded beliefs, on others.

No different than society passing laws and imposing those laws (representing a belief set) on others.

They say it is because of the "sanctity of life", and yet they are so casual with life in so many other areas.

Sanctity of life indeed, particularly of the innocent.

They are often seen leading the cheer squad for capital punishment

Hardly. Want to offer proof of "cheer leading"?

seems the sanctity of life my cease after exiting the womb.

Do you not support abortion, euthanasia and assisted suicide? Yet you think a position on capital punishment (which many Catholics are opposed to) destroys the sanctity of life? We are talking about murderers who take away life from the innocent. You are slinging insults without real substance.

They are oftenn seen leading the the race to the next war, holy or unholy, completly ignoring Jesus' command to "turn the other cheek".

Turning the other cheek relates to insults, not ignoring the right of self defence, not ignoring the plight of the oppressed, not ignoring the wholesale murder from dictators like Saddam.

Far too often they will oppose medical research and medical treatments that can save life - do not become ill and be admitted to a Catholic hospital, your options are far greater in the public system.

Catholics fully support ethical research. Catholic Doctors will do their utmost to save lives. They are just not so good at deliberately ending it.

And NOW we have men in frocks

Is that supposed to be a slur or something? You aren't a homophobic misogynist who thinks it somehow unmanly to wear a robe? Goodness knows what you think of male judges - those "men in wigs"!

declaring their own lives are of so little worth that they are prepared to die because they don't lke their perceptions of the new US President's policies.

Declaring the importance that they place on this issue, one greater than their own life. Given the sanctity of life, obviously this underscores their belief of the sanctity of life of the innocent unborn.

And they were not talking about perception of a policy. They are talking here about the reality - a million abortions a year.

I think your argument is weak Rex.

  6. It's weak and morally bankrupt Zen, to compare abortion as more preferable to capital punishment.

I cannot understand how people like him think, executing a mass murderer is someone wrong, but knocking off an unborn baby that has done absolutely nothing is just fine.

And they wonder why people keep associating the left with the scum of the earth.

Thanks to whoever deleted that worthless comment. No matter how much you argue, they won't be convinced.

  7. "I cannot understand how people like him think,"

They don't--they merely feel and what they feel must be true.
There's a name for that condition: stupidty.
