Friday Night Free for All

Whats 3+3+3?

The maximum number of hours sleep I've had for the past three nights. Deadline reached. Mission accomplished. The battle is over, but the war continues. And this is just work I'm talking about. Not that work is a battle zone, but in my sleep deprived state I'm prone to ramble.

A bit of a curry, some beverages and I'll see if I can stay awake long enough to post the odd comment.

How's every-one else gone this week? Drop in and say hello. What have I missed this week?

Comments

  1. Greetings everyone.
Barnsley Bill has cooked chilli con carne.
    I'll be opening the Lindauer.

And I haven't been sleeping too well as the heat and humidity is affecting my sleep.
It's lovely up here in Kerikeri but it rains a lot.

  2. Well, I have just finished week 3 of a grad dip in teaching and next week I'll be observing in a classroom.
If you have any tips or any ideas you'd like to preload a nascent teacher with then I'm all ears...

  3. Zen, you've missed the week, that's what.

Only 45 more until next year.

  4. Evening all.

I recall it being warm a little while ago, but then a coldish tint to the nights has crept in.

A nice end summer curry sorts that problem. Now for a movie. That's all my brain can cope with tonight.

Will catch up with the blogging evanchually. Maybe I can at least dig up a pun just in case scrub one makes an appearance.

Any movie recommendations? I know I've asked this before, but my memory is short term at the moment.

And while I'm on that subject, any movie recommendations? I know I've asked this before, but my memory is short term at the moment.

Every thing I learned about teaching I got from Kung Fu (the David Carradine version) and Dead Poets Society. So I'm not going to be much help.

You can try and call your pupils grasshopper and see how it goes though.

  7. Evening all.
Friday evening & I think quite a few of us go in to 'rambling' mode, sleep or no.
And you're right Gooner ... quite simply he's lost a week.
And Greg, "nascent" I usually associate with emotions, passion ... haven't really associated it with 'emerging male teachers' before. Good on you though, and post graduate even better.

  8. Oh, and movies ... I was dozily doing some work the other night and the end of 'the departed' caught my attention ... amazing how 'splatter' heightens the arousal, cuts through the preoccupations ... don't think you would even be aware of a hot curry.

  9. mojo 822pm.

The word "nascent" has nothing to do with emotions and passion.

It means "to be born" or "newly emerged".

    More generally,
it's my intention to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem or the scenery.
One can gripe only for so long about NCEA and how things are going to hell in handcart before trying something proactive.

  10. Aha ... you see, I was correct Greg .... 'passion.'

  11. Evening all. About to leave for work and I'm suffering from Zen's ailment too.
    Sleep? What's that?
Lots of rain today and now it's warmish and very humid which suits us just fine.
Wasn't Rodney Hide's address about councils a ripper? If only he can make some of it come true...

  12. well, that leads to some curious usage then:
"Gordon Ramsey is a nascent chef", "Dan Vettori is a nascent cricketer", "Bill English is a nascent National party member". Doesn't make sense if it means both "new" and "passionate".

  13. Good evening FNFFAers, the heat up here has definitely worn its welcome out. Of course we now have mozzies as well due to the showers we have had.
    Movies..
For escapist fun with a fast moving plot try "smokin aces". I will be heading to bed shortly to continue my epic struggle through the complete Kubrick, tonights nine hour marathon will be Barry Lyndon. My least favourite.

  14. Just heard russia sank a chinese ship the other day ... can find no reference to it tho ... fantasy??

  15. Oh Dear? I'm sorry I even used it now. :)

Barry Lyndon is hands down the worst movie not only from Kubrick but sloshes around the bottom of the barrel with other soporific-bizzaro blunders such as "Orlando" and maybe those Tarantino movies made recently that no-one saw.

  16. greg is right I'm afraid, Mojo. The only redliable source, Oxford, has this to say.

    nascent /"nas(@)nt, "neI-/
    · adj.
1 just coming into existence and beginning to display signs of future potential.

Doesn't seem to be a particularly emotional definition.

  17. Oh dear ... you too Adolf ... concrete bloody thinkers who don't or can't read properly. I would suggest you both revisit Jackson's splatter movies for a bit of rebirthing.
I have no issue with the meaning of the word at all ... I'm beginning to have a little difficulty with floundering neonates though.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Morning all. I've re-birthed, so presumably had a mother of a sleep.

Mojo, the nascent one, perhaps my worthy fellow bloggers don't have the history of your eclectic posts over the last few years to provide the correct context?

It's a drift thing, only if you get it. The newly emerged, the young and the fresh, are by their nascence open to passion, "the being part of the solution rather than part of the problem"

Passion is perhaps an attribute of the nascent.

This is a good thing. May all your pupils and students be nascent too!

  19. Indeed ... truly the moderator Zen.
