“The Labour-led Government is able to cut taxes while maintaining and improving investment in important areas like health and education because we have managed New Zealand’s finances prudently. The Reserve Bank opens the books shortly. Hopefully, prudent will be an honest and trustworthy statement.
“New Zealanders can trust that Labour’s tax cut package is fair, affordable, and realistic, unlike the National Party’s plan to borrow recklessly for tax cuts when international financial markets are in meltdown,“ Helen Clark said.Helen Clark says this with a straight face? That's a 10 billion dollar package over the next few years. Not even chewing gum was affordable a year ago. It defies logic to state the National Party are reckless when Labour have just spent a billion on rail, signed up for new crushing taxes under ETS and thrown 10 billion dollars into their election campaign.
“The Labour-led Government has also brought forward the indexing of Working for Families payments to help families cope with increasing costsI thought their was a cap on election spending? Not when it's the incumbent government and tax payer money. Obviously, they count on the money being eagerly accepted and the motivations forgotten.
From today, around 530,000 SuperGold Card holders can also access free off-peak travel on public transport in most regional councils around the country.Poor Winston, another policy brought and paid for by a shadow special interest group - Labour. I hear he is most peeved that Labour take credit for NZ first policy.
“This election is about who New Zealanders can trust. The changes which take effect today show that Labour can be trusted to deliver on its promises and do what is best for the country,” Helen Clark said.Because what is best for the Labour Party is best for the country. Until the books open, I remain cynical. Once the Reserve Bank open up the government accounts for inspection, we will see just how prudent and trustworthy Labour have been.

It will actually be incredible if there is any money left, the way Labour seems to be spending it hand-over-fist. I see in today's news that Cullen is going to spend another $121 million in electrifying the rail system. A lot of it will come from taxing petrol....again!
ReplyDeleteQuite a good cartoon in the Herald today showing Cullen shoveling spade loads of cash into a steam engine boiler. That's pretty much what it's come down to.
