Liberal freedom is founded on the concept of consent. It is a vital component of their arguments on how society determines what is "right" and what is "wrong". I don't think it is exaggerating to say consent underpins liberal morality.
So it should be used precisely, but liberals of course, will redefine even this word to suit their purposes. Take the recent case of an 18 year old starting a sexual relationship with a 14 year old. A 14 year old cannot technically consent. One adult starting a sexual relationship with a 14 year old is wrong, and there are penalties for this.
But in this case, the ACLU thinks otherwise:
The Florida ACLU has spoken out on her behalf, saying this is a harmless, consensual relationship.
There go the liberals, effectively seeking to lower the age of consent to 14, or ignoring the fact that 14 year olds cannot give consent. The ACLU makes out this is all "harmless" and moral (because there is consent).
Well no - if you read different news reports of adults seducing 14 year olds, they are normally described as "sexual abuse".
Part of the reason the ACLU are involved with this story is that the 18 year old is a lesbian, and has seduced a 14 year old girl. This supposedly gives the ACLU the chance to play the homophobic card, and argue further that consent is different for those that demand equal rights but not equal responsibilities.
Another part of the problem that will offend Liberals is that the parents are involved - how dear they take an active part in their daughter's upbringing and expect to keep minors away from adults who seek a sexual relationship. Conservatives should note both "threats" to Conservative morality, and it is an ongoing fight to preserve even these standards from the immoral.
Some reports refer to the 18 year old as a kid, or a teenager themselves. Not a "real" adult. That logic allows a much greater degree of flexibility in deciding the morality, and it is deliberately twisting the words to suit their preferences. So is an 18 year old an adult, or are they not? So typical that such Liberals expect adult privileges without adult responsibilities.
There are reasons to be merciful, but more importantly, the lesson should be clear to all adults of any sexuality - learn the meaning of legal consent, and stop sexually abusing kids. That's the minimum standard for a Liberal, so stop lowering the standards further.

Kaitlyn Hunt, an 18-year-old Florida student, is getting lots of sympathy after being criminally charged over her sexual relationship with her 14-year-old girlfriend. Hunt and the younger girl were basketball teammates. Hunt’s parents say the girl’s parents went to the police, “because they blamed Kaitlyn for their child's homosexuality,” as CBS put it. Hunt’s family put up a Facebook page called “Free Kate,” with links to T-shirts, bracelets, and a petition. More than 45,000 people have signed it. The Florida ACLU has spoken out on her behalf, saying this is a harmless, consensual relationship.

The parents of the (then) 14 year old have commented further as well, saying they have been portrayed in a negative light, but have only tried to do the best for their daughter.
ReplyDeleteWPEC-TV claims that the Smith family’s revelations include a “bombshell that will likely turn this investigation on its head.”
And here it apparently is: “Our daughter was 14, and this girl was 18,” Jim told the outlet, clarifying previous inconsistencies surrounding the teens’ ages at the time of their relationship (previously, Hunt’s mother, Kelley, had written in a Facebook post that her daughter was 17 when the relationship began).
According to Laurie, she and her husband told Hunt that the relationship wasn’t right and, by their account, the older teen refused to listen. The “Free Kate” mantra, the Smiths maintain, hasn’t been an accurate one thus far.
“It’s not the way it was. It was quite different,” she said. “We had actually told Miss Hunt that this was wrong.”
The high schooler was allegedly warned twice.
“Another adult, a mother, came to me and said ‘Ms. Smith you need to know this…we told Miss Hunt to leave your daughter alone. But they are in a relationship, and she’s 18.’ 18? My daughter is only 14.”
When their daughter began acting out, as many teens do, she ran away. Jim called the shock “the worst thing” that he has ever experienced. Assuming that she wouldn’t have willingly fled, the parents initially assumed that someone took her — but that wasn’t the case.
After being told to stay away from their daughter, Kate purportedly picked up the 14-year-old. Because the relationship apparently didn’t stop, despite the aforementioned warnings, the Smiths said they had no choice but to turn to the law.
As far as the issue of homosexuality goes, Laurie and Jim seemed perplexed in their WPEC-TV interview. While they have been painted as anti-gay in media and slapped with allegations that they blame Hunt for their daughter’s sexuality, the embattled parents said that this isn’t how they feel about the issue.
“They made me seem as if I’m a monster,” Laurie said of bloggers’ attacks, noting that she and her husband have turned to the media to get their story out. “That’s why I’m talking to you…The stories that people are saying…I love my daughter and I am willing to do whatever to protect her.”

Yes, I wanted to focus on two things in my post - the deliberate misuse of the term "consent" by the ACLU, and the fact that the progressive left will attack parental rights (responsibilities) on these sorts of issues.
ReplyDeleteThe thing about age of consent is that it's a matter of social convention rather than biology, which makes it disputable.
ReplyDeleteFor a handy illustration of just how disputable it is for liberals, check out this unedifying comments thread, in which I apparently made the liberals present feel sick with my repulsive view that most parents don't actually want their 14-year-olds getting banged by adult sex offenders.
Significant there is that the liberals argue from the perspective of having been horny 14-year-olds, and having been one myself I get the point. However, the idea that a 14-year-old might not be the best judge of what's good for a 14-year-old escapes them, perhaps because they've plenty of experience of adolescence but none of being a parent (at least I hope like hell they're not parents).
Hi PM, that was a scary thread. Your theory sounds right.
ReplyDeleteI note in this particular case, the parents warned the women away, but she came back and "abducted" the girl. Seems like she had a chance to back off and wait 4 years, but chose not to. There needs to be some consequences to actions like that.
I find it difficult to treat this flavour of liberal with respect. If they had any moral or logical consistency they'd also be advocates for putting 14-year-old criminals through the adult justice system, but they'd be horrified if anyone suggested that.
ReplyDeleteInconsistency is the calling card of the left. If an eighteen year old man were to have had sex with a fourteen year old girl, that is wrong. However, if an eighteen year old lesbian were to do it, well that is just about love and tenderness and could in no way be wrong. Therefore, they have to move the line regarding a 14 year old girl's consent. No possible way to give consent for the male and completely O.K. to give consent for the female. Inconsistent? Absolutely, but then the left always did like situational ethics.
ReplyDeleteBollocks. The thread I linked to involves two men aged at least 20 with a 14-year-old girl. Wrong, yes - inconsistent, no.
