Condolences to family of Jason Palmer [UPDATED]

My condolences to the family of Jason Palmer, who died yesterday.
Jason Palmer, 33, a former member of the United States Marine Corps who came to New Zealand eight years ago, died yesterday after an inmate at Spring Hill Corrections Facility, about 65km south of Auckland, punched him in the head about 1pm on Saturday.

Mr Palmer was one of three officers unlocking an inmate's cell when the attack happened. The punch threw him to the floor, where he hit his head. He was taken to Auckland's Middlemore Hospital suffering massive head injuries. Life support was turned off yesterday afternoon.

He leaves behind his wife, Tracy, and children Riley, 5, and Abbey, 2.
What a senseless, waste of a life.

UPDATE: The newspaper article that I quoted from has not included another child from a previous relationship that Jason Palmer never got to meet. A son, Taylor Palmer, aged 13.

  1. More lives ruined by scumbags. And still some people make excuses for them.

  2. Entirely preventable, despite what the politicians are saying.

Maxi inmates should be putting their hands through a hatch to be handcuffed before being let out of a cell- as you see on tv in the high security US prisons.

  3. ossie, unless the hands are cuffed behind the back, the outcome could still be the same, or worse, given the weaponising eefect of a double fisted blow with the exposed metal of handcuffs.

  4. I'll take the expert's opinion on this. ;)

  5. Leftrightout-

Ever been in an actual fistfight?

In cuffs you are at a severe disadvantage as your mobility and balance is gone.

But I take your point- it can only help to cuff their hands behind the back. They are VERY easy to move about that way!

  6. He also has a 13 year old son named Taylor Palmer who lives with his mother Susan Cool (Hill) in Kingsville, Texas United States. This is Jason's first child. Taylor had never met his dad , but was suppose to meet him in the near future. He is grieving for the father he will never meet and deserves to be acknowledged. I,m not sure why he is not being mentioned or included. Respectfully Lee Cool step-father to Taylor Palmer.

  7. Thank you for speaking up, he definitely deserves to be included in our prayers and thoughts at this time.

I'm also pleased to hear this advocacy from his step-father. I hope Taylor takes much comfort that his step-father is there for him, and is the kind of man to take the time to broadcast this information on his behalf.

  8. You updated your web site to include Taylor, but then took him back off? I hope you don't question the validity of my claim. My email address is leedcool@yahoo.com, you can aquire information from me there to substantiate the verasity that Taylor is Jason's son. I'm sure both Jason and Taylor would want this.

  9. Hi Lee. I have no reason to doubt the validity of your claim. I added the comment above. To my knowledge, no-one updated the post to add Taylor's name, and then took him off. It simply hasn't been touched as yet.

I will contact Lucia and ask her to update the post accordingly.

  10. Here in the US some prisons make them get on their knees and handcuff their hands behind their back. Also, our guards have batons, pepper spray or tazors.

I heard his job got the ok back last year for batons and spray, but the department of corrections hadn't passed anyout to the guards.

It wouldn't of helped the situation because they still need to implement a plan of action of securing their prisoners before allowing them out of their cells.

He's lucky New Zealand doesn't have the death penalty because his scum behind would be fried.

  11. Hi Lee,

I've just updated the post. I'm sorry I didn't do so earlier. Time for me to do these sorts of things, at this point, is somewhat scarce right now.
