Haven't done one of these for ages, but was reminded when I accidentally found the first ever one: Friday Night Free For All on Sir Humphreys' on June 10, 2005. More than seven years ago now.
Since then, a number of other blogs have taken up the open thread concept, KiwiBlog's General Debate being a prime example.
I think they are a good idea for places where commenters gather. We're not so busy in that way anymore, but for blogs that are busy, it gives people an opportunity to talk to each other about anything rather than having to loosely stick to the topic of the post. It builds community if it's done well.
Hi all;
ReplyDelete'tis a freezing night but we have a nice fire.
The cat is lying on its back, paws in the air, basking.
Sir Humphreys was a long time ago, many posts under the bridge since then - no?
Cat's sure have relaxing down pat.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be basking by the fire right now, not that we have one.
Hi Andrei,
ReplyDeleteYes, long time ago now. I feel old and like I'm losing my edge.
Hi Madeleine,
Long time, no see!
Maybe a picture of a fireplace will help?
Hang on a mo ...
Somehow basking in front of my computer with a fireplace picture on it just doesn't feel the same.
ReplyDeleteIt has been a while; ever since I got a job I have been considerably more offline but for Facebook, but you are on Facebook I have not seen you.
The picture is pretty though. I can just imagine it.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Well, you know, every little bit helps. You need a heater in the background to provide the warmth.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am on Facebook, but I can't really do it. Blogging is more my native environment.
Facebook is quicker, you zip in, catch up, respond/write/share a bit and zip out.
ReplyDeleteI see we are Facebook friends...
ReplyDeleteGot a fire going here, too; although it's probably not as cold here as it is down South...
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about that the other day, while I have re-acclimatised to Auckland temperatures I still no longer find the winters here that cold because I still remember the Dunedin ones. Yet I remember finding the Auckland ones cold before I lived in Dunedin.
ReplyDeleteMy husband likes the fireplace, so here's the link to the 3D Fireplace Screen Saver.
ReplyDeleteEvening all.
ReplyDeleteRoaring fires are great. Especially on cold winter nights or most New Zealand days within 50km of Wellington.
What's that saying about fires?
"Where there is smoke, there's tax. Excessive tax"
Hi Fletch,
ReplyDeleteGood to see you around as well. Still foggy up there?
The Hand Mirror are railing against Family First and their stance on sex education.
ReplyDeleteApparently, consent and pleasure is the main criteria for teaching children about sex.
I suggested Consent isn't everything
The link will eventually disappear. I think it shocking that criminal activity is endorsed by school councillors and CYF workers (who can then arrange an abortion without parental knoweldge and cover up their little "mistake").
Technically, 14 year olds cannot consent, but this is increasingly being ignored by the liberal mindset. You are old enough at any age to decide if you want sex, unless a Priest is allegedly involved, as your recent posts point out.
Their post really deserves a post in response. If only I could clone myself or become more motivated!
ReplyDeleteI really should finish my Fifty Shades of Grey post.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea what 50 Shades of Grey was about, just that "everyone" was reading it.
ReplyDeleteI stumbled across an excerpt and read a little and realised two things, the writing in it is appalling and the storyline is awful. Why would anyone want to read it?
Not suggesting you want to read it Lucia Maria.
ReplyDeleteMadeleine,
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't want to read it. I'm reading enough articles about the book or books to know that. They just bring up some interesting issues that I will just leave tomorrow to think about.
We just had a visit from the Holy See on my Dunderhead post. They didn't look at anything else.
ReplyDeleteI hope they come back and look at other posts.
ReplyDeleteHow on earth did I manage to get their attention in the first place, and with a throwaway post!!! aaaarrrgh
ReplyDeleteFNFFA, brings back memories of trying to studying late on a friday night and succumbing to distraction :)
ReplyDeletebefore the world started shaking with alarming frquency!
ReplyDeleteHi Ciaron,
ReplyDeleteThat must be so unsettling. I was used to earthquakes from when I was growing up in Wellington in the 70's (there were some real doozies, much worse than what we experienced here the other night), but nothing broke or fell down that I was aware of. I can imagine what it would be like dealing with constant shaking where there has been death and damage.
So, you've been reading this blog for 5 years (as mentioned in the other thread), that's just amazing. How did you find us, was it through Sir Humphrey's or somewhere else?
I first stumbled across blogs in general at the time Auckland city council was keen on having a waterfront stadium for the RWC. Cameron Slater was running a poll on it and I found his blog through Google, I think.
ReplyDeleteFrom there, I found Sir Humphries, Crusader Rabbit, Oswald Bastable, Keeping Stock, and of course Kiwiblog.
I do remember a turning point for me was a post you did on Hell Pizza delivering condoms in their flyers. That was probably the point I realised that conservatism was the only logical viewpoint and the same time I heard Jesus knocking:)
Opps, sorry Lucia. Didn't see I was being addressed :)
ReplyDeleteIs cold enough here this morning (Sunday) anyway. Had a frost this morning, and it's 6 deg outside at the moment (9.30am)
Ciaron,
ReplyDeleteWow. Will have to do a poll of our readers to see how many other long timers like yourself are out there.
Fletch,
You've got to pay more attention!
:P
