I watched Casino Royale again the other day, and one of the things that struck me is how Bond stood up when his female acquaintance left the table. I think it happened twice in the movie.
Do you think this is old fashioned and that women still like these kinds of things?
Do you do them? What kind of response do you get? Or, if you're a woman, do you like this kind of thing?
Sorry that I've started posting with these light kind of topics, but I'm all "smacked out" on discussing that bill for now :)
I certainly like it. But it doesn't happen often, so when it does, it's a surprise. I try not to act surprised, though.
ReplyDeleteWhat about blowing away bad guys without due process?
ReplyDeleteGood manners or just good policy?
Bad manners but good policy.
ReplyDeleteI've yet to meet a female acquaintance who objects to you demonstrating respect in some manner - standing up when she does, holding doors open, offering to carry stuff for her etc. But you can't possibly do this stuff for a woman who is your friend, because you don't do stuff like that for your friends. Standing up when a female friend leaves the table is like a declaration that she's no longer a friend. I guess the big question is whether Bond still stands up for her after she's dropped her knickers...
Bond movies are great but Fleming's Good vs SPECTRE is awfully simplistic in a culture that loves "24". The manners of a military sociopath are moot. A Bond would adapt social manners to suit his objectives.
ReplyDeleteI prefer LeCarre.
