More double XX food fascism

Evil corporates are killing babies by selling unwitting mothers junk food to feed their infants. Indeed the humble rusk that has been on the market for over one hundred years is now revealed to be more sugary than chocolate digestive biscuits.

So saith agitators from the Children's food campaign on the occasion of the release of their own assay into the constituents of store bought baby food . To quote Joint co-ordinator Christine Haigh
"The results of this survey are staggering. Many foods marketed for babies and young children are advertised as 'healthy'.

"In reality, in terms of sugar and saturated fat content, some are worse than junk food.

"In particular, failing to correctly label products that contain dangerous trans fats is outrageous."

What these clueless cretins fail to comprehend is that food really has killed multitudes of people throughout human history. Milk was notorious for carrying tuberculosis, for example, and who could forget that friendly bug Clostridium botulinum, a killer of untold millions, particularly infants.

And that these so called "unhealthy" foods are a much safer and healthier than anything our ancestors ever had and in truth probably would present a safer option than that available to most of humanity on the planet today.

Anyway as I read about all of this I observed that all food alarmism seems to originate from one gender.

But I have recently been informed by a person with two X chromosomes that my concept of gender is just a "social construct" without any foundation in reality. So my observation clearly has no merit.

  1. They are right that much baby food is junk. We pick carefully whenever we buy packaged stuff, often the worst stuff has a Plunket logo on it, which would make you think it was ok...

Much of it is disgusting too. One type (Watties Chicken & Noodles with Vegetables) is so bad even the DOG wouldn't touch it. Seriously. Others have said the same - don't buy it.

There's a big market for baby food that is actually edible, just a hint for anyone in the food technology business.

  2. sjdennis,

Junk is an emotive word, and in the eye of the beholder.

The baby food you buy may well be unpalatable but it is safe and ,probably nutritious.

Its unpalatablity may well be the result of interfering busy bodies whining about too much of whatever is supposed to be bad for you this month.

  3. Certainly it is safe. But nutritionally some of it is misleading. For example, you would expect a "custard" to be made from milk, egg and cornflour - in reality, tinned baby custard is often basically thickened sugar water. Perfectly safe to eat, but with nowhere near the nutritional value you would expect from something called "custard".

I have no problem with someone selling it, the customer is free to choose whether to buy it. But there is certainly a market for someone offering a better product.
