Tsk tsk - no fire extinguisher at flag burning

Three students who burnt a New Zealand flag on Anzac Day have been temporarily suspended from Victoria University.

But not for burning the flag per se.

Rather their crime was the breached health and safety standards.
"These students have shown a disregard for the safety of others and of university property," dean of humanities and social sciences Professor Deborah Willis said.

The students had set the New Zealand flag alight using an accelerant without warning anyone around them or having any means to put out the fire.

Go figure.

  1. The incident happened on the deck of the student bar. I am told that the two 'offenders' stood and burnt the flag in front of the only exit from the deck - not very smart had the fire spread out of control. The deck is one floor off the ground and next to a heavily bushed cliff face, making jumping/climbing off it in case of an emergency very dangerous. This, I feel, is the real reason why the students were expelled. We previously heard that they would simply be banned from the Student Union Building (where the flag was burned) however a total ban is much more appropriate IMO.

  3. Burning the flag ey, well serves them right i say. If they hate NZ so much, perhaps they should eff off to somewhere more likable.

  4. Oh, I see 'Erlend'--valuing the symbol of our country is now "ignorant" and "fascist" is it"
I assume you apply the same terms to those flying the Maori separatist flag?
And who says we define ourselves through the construct of a nation? You know each of us individually, to be able to make that statement with an assurance based on fact? because you don't, and therefore your simply flinging mindless abuse.
(and in any case, are you equally scathing of those who define themselves by their brownness? I doubt it somehow)
The flag may have been invented by our forefathers, but you fail to explain why that's necessarily a bad thing.
As for "pathetic"--go look in a mirror. Or give us the details of your dazzling background, that we may look, and be awed and corrected.

  5. Hmm..a few typos there. Never mind. :-) Typing with a cat against the keyboard may not be such a great idea.

  6. Erland Flag burning is just purile - a way spoiled over-privileged talentless, bratlets and bratesses use attract attention because they have nothing of merit to offer in gaining the worlds notice.

  7. "bratlets and bratesses" ...that's new one.

No need to burn the flag but it is time to change it as (almost) noone identifies with it in the current form (so Joel's childish actions were all in vain anyway).
