The Cost of Democracy

A few people are complaining about the 9 million it's going to cost for the referendum on smacking. The only point they really have is that we could have easily saved heaps of money by holding it with the election. Blame Labour for that.

Meanwhile, MP's have just put in their expense claims for the last 6 months. It's around 4 million. That's heading towards 8 million for the year.

If that's what it costs, then that's what it costs.

  1. Indeed. 9 mio is a pittance really for the opportunity of a bit of direct democracy. At the end of the day we know it's just Bradford's chums stirring things up to detract from the truth.

  2. You also have a problem with expenses? Like in the recently UK scandal?

  3. Francisco, I personally don't think there's much of a problem with expenses in NZ. One issue was that they were all hidden from public view, and some (most but not all) of these items have just been published, which is good.

I was just pointing out that the expenses in a year come close to the cost of a referendum, which some people are demanding it be cancelled due to the cost.

  4. Perhaps it's time to start horse-whipping politicians who waste our money.
