Christian attack on NZ Spy Base

I was horrified to hear that a Dominican Friar (he is a Catholic Priest) was involved in will-full damage at Waihopai Spy Base, and had lead two other men to do the same.

If intelligence gathering is the most "evil" thing happening in NZ at the present time that required a physical act, then all the men involved need to get their heads read.

On NZ's Catholic Blog, Being Frank, the only people that weren't horrified were a young, liberal blogger and an older, constantly dissenting commenter. Which says something.

  1. I brought this up with my atheist (but refuses to be called one) work colleague when he said "religious radicals" attacked the spy base. My answer which he agreed with was why do we keep talking about religious radicals and not call Greenpeace etc. atheist radicals?

Personally I think there are far better things he can be doing with his time, preaching the gospel for one, after that giving out the social justice - feeding the poor etc.

  2. Well one of them is religious and a radical but he's not radically religious so I wouldn't call him a religious radical. His religiosity is more of an incidental issue it seems.

  3. I've got no doubt that these guys are sincere about wehat they're doing, but all the sincerity in the world doesn't make criminal behaviour right. And as ever, the poor old taxpayer will pick up the tab for the damage they caused - estimated at $1m - as well as the coust of accomodation them at Her Majesty's pleasure!

  4. Fr Murnane is a disciple of the American nutter, Fr John Dear whom made many an attack on American Air Force bases.

And what else would our dissenting friend at BF say?

  5. What's the base missing when it's off-line?

  6. Don't know greg, probably high altitude Russian bombers or alien space ships??

I see the three radicals are on a hunger strike in prison.

  7. I love how xtians sarcastically refer to Islam as a "religion of peace", yet when fellow xtians try to follow jesus by beating swords into ploughshares, they TOO are derided as nutters.

I well remember in my lonely days of consciouncess objection that the only mainstream religious that was actively anti war/anti conscription were catholics. My own, Presbyterian, elders shrugged their shoulders and said "gotta do what gummint wants".

What is wrong with standing against war?

  8. What is wrong with standing against war?

Were they standing against war or destroying property?

  9. Fugley - I have no problems with people, Christian or otherwise voicing their opposition to war. However I do have a problem when people, even with the best of motives, wilfully damage something which doesn't belong to them, especially when I as a taxpayer will have to contribute to the cost of repairs!

  10. Zen, war destroys more than property, so maybe a little property damage isn't too high a price to pay.

Inventory, I have a bigger problem when I, as a taxpayer, am asked to underwrite the cost of an unwinnable war.

  11. Fugley, you'll have to explain the connection between their actions and preventing war.

Are you also of the mind set that if one side never fought, then there would never be wars?

War destroys more than a perception of a violation of freedom, so maybe Waihopi base isn't too high a price to pay?

I have a problem with pacifism if it means my entire family are marched of to Gulags, Concentration Camps or simply slaughtered without resistance.

  12. Give me liberation theology or death !

  13. Liberation Theology - that would be the door to the right. Death - try stepping to the left wing.
