I've finally made it back to the lair and see that the blog is silent. Well, might get a few stray comments yet, the midnight oil has yet to be burned.
It's been a strange week, the school holidays change the rhythm of life.
The tsunami in Samoa was tragic news, and seems like another has struck Indonesia.
Lives lost and others irrevocably changed in the blink of an eye. We all have a finite life, and we generally do not know how many days we have before us, so every day behind us is hopefully part of the journey that sees us become the best people we can possibly be. Some are on this journey to save their souls, others to spend them. Others still may not realise life is not a spectator sport. Even those who think they are on the sidelines are in the game.
I'm straying into one of those philosophical musings that make it appropriate to discuss three items of wisdom from around the traps:
* It was Henry Ford who said “Whether you think you can or can’t…you are right.”
* If you are going through Hell, then don't stop
* If you are going to criticise some-one, first walk a mile in their shoes. That way, if they are angry with your criticism, you are a mile away from them, and you have their shoes.
They all seem valuable pieces of advice.

Evening all. We had a rather interesting bloggers drinks last night, good night enjoyed by all except Phil U...
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteIt's the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels today (and the anniversary of the founding of Opus Dei)... and coming up to three years since my return to the Faith on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (formally Our Lady of Victory to celebrate victory of Lepanto over the Muslims).
Interesting and amazing merging of dates there, probably of no sense to most people, but I'm completely awed.
Madeleine,
Sounds like there is a story there, but maybe not a good one. I can only imagine.
With Phil U involved ...
ReplyDeleteI can only join ...
the ... dots
(Hope he has a better day tomorrow)
The more we have bloggers drinks the more I wish you guys at NZ Conservative were Auckland based!
ReplyDeleteMatt and I arrived to see some regulars, new-regular Whaleoil sitting with a blonde chick who when no one introduced us I figured was Mrs Whaleoil. Another face I didn't recognise then pounced on us immediately, we'd barely sat down, he said something like "I was going to leave a curly question on red alert today in response to the prehistoric christianity you exhibited in the comment you'd there." The tone was confrontational. We'd just met Phil U...
He began ranting about capital letters being evil and paragraphs looking better without them and I went 'ok, why did I sit next to him, this is going to be fun tonight.' Next thing I know regular Olivia, libertarian from SOLO, is yelling at Phil to shut the f.... up because he wouldn't let her speak. The blonde woman began ripping into him to and the two of them took him apart. It was fearsome. Phil was obnoxious and spoke over the top of everyone but the girls were on a roll. After having gone on about the Jewish state being evil and spouting anti-Americanisms he then took objection to the blonde woman's reference to someone as a little jew, which was clearly said, by her tone, as a tongue in cheek nickname for someone she knew, and stormed out of the pub screaming racism.
It was all rather overwhelming.
I was thinking Mrs Whaleoil is seriously savage.
Then a waiter brought over a silver bucket with champagne in it and champagne glasses for the girls only. I began to think, this is weird, yet strangely familiar... it occured to me there was a well known female blogger who drank champagne who was equally as ascerbic and quick witted as Mrs Whaleoil... but I still didn't click.
It wasn't until Matt said, you know that woman with Whaleoil, I heard someone call her Cathy and then before I thought I heard someone call he Cactus. Maybe I'm imagining it.
He wasn't. I'd just met Cactus Kate who I have to say is very cool in person. She even hugged me and told I wasn't the nutter she'd thought I was. Go figure!
Whaleoil has a writeup of the argument with her and Phil U and Olivia here: http://whaleoil.gotcha.co.nz/2009/10/02/the-tale-of-bloggers-drinks/
Sounds a blast. I'll check out the link tomorrow. Night all.
ReplyDeleteNight.
ReplyDeleteHeading to bed too!
Wow. I though Phil U would be very meek and docile in person, but apparently not. Who knew!
