Mass child beatings

Frog Blog are going on the offensive on behalf of Sue Bradford, and doing a beat-up about the s59 petition. They title the post "The right to beat your child petition". Yep, as commenter Will so accurately said on that thread:

"I’m not paranoid enough to imagine that there are 300,000 people in New Zealand who are agitating for the right to beat their children. Most of them just want to be left alone to raise their kids. It’s hard enough to begin with."

  1. Excellence also from bjchip:

Sorry Toad, I don’t accept that you make laws by letting the police decide what is and isn’t illegal. That IS Parliament’s job. This is not uncommon here in NZ. As a way to implement a “rule of law” however, it sucks swamp water.

We just did the same thing with the EFB for crissakes. The Electoral Commission gets to decide all manner of complex stuff and nobody knows what the law is until it gets taken through a whole lot of courts and a lot of precedent is created.

  2. I'm bl**dy sick of Sue talking about 'beating' and 'assault' when a light smack is neither. She is deliberately using nomenclature as applies to violence which has nothing to do with good parents applying discipline at home.

If Sue had an exemplary record of child-raising we might stop and think, well, she might have a point.

As it stands, I don't think either she or Helen are in a position to advise parents on how they should be raising their children.

  3. There's an all out assault in the letters to the editor in the Dom Post today as well. The first one goes on about, next we'll be wanting the right to beat our wives and so on (from Mike Coleman of Khandallah) and the next one goes on to link the high number of murders in NZ and the number of people that want "the right to smack small children about" (from Heather Mulholland of Pt Howard).

  4. It's a controversy that's been rich in non sequiturs from day one. Of course, non sequiturs in letters to the editor are a long-standing tradition...

Funny how we've had a lot more of these violent crimes committed by youth, even this year, since the anti-smacking law was passed.

  6. I listened to Oliver Driver on NewsTalk ZB on Sunday night (after 8:30pm) and he drew a similiar parallel. Something to the effect of increasing violence in NZ, so why are all these NZ'ers calling for violence (smacking) to be legalised against children? He ran out of steam a bit, when a woman phoned up and said if they can ban smacking, then they (government) can also ban all violent computer and playstation games. But, but, but - that's different, he said. It was the highlight of the evening.

    Yeah, exactly.

The same thing happened in Sweden violent youth gang crime went through the roof.
