Homepaddock has a charming story of three shop workers making a pact to give up smoking. The latest price rise had spurred them on. [Link: Price Rises Work]. I couldn't resist a comment:
If they thought a bit harder, only one person had to give up, and could have contributed a portion of their savings to the other two smokers so that all three saved money and two people could continue smoking.

It's a wonderful metaphor, though it probably wouldn't take the ex-smoker long to work out the pain of paying for others' pleasures.
