Chris Trotter: What went wrong?

Chris Trotter extols the economic benefits the people have gained under the current Labour government that should have locked in loyal support. But loyal support is nowhere to be seen. What's gone wrong, he asks? A taxi driver tells him.

The trouble with this government," he said, "is that it is always telling us what to do."

There ya go. Throwing money around will only get you so far. Once you start trying to be overly controlling, any money or gifts given will count for naught. That's just as true for individual relationships as it is for governments. You can't buy love.
