How many ghosts are there in the past that we are just blithely unaware of? I was just re-reading some of Hilaire Belloc's Survivals and New Arrivals today, and then I came across an article on the 1,400 year war. Belloc said "The whole story of Europe looks quite different when you see it from the point of view of the average cultivated Frenchman or Italian from what it does in the eyes of the average educated English or American Catholic." And then, reading the article I quote below on the 1,400 year war, it seems the point of view of the Hungarian is one that cannot be fathomed by those of us living in an Anglo-Saxon Culture. Having made the mistake of settling in a bad geopolitical neighbourhood, the Magyars would come to see themselves as defenders of the West, to which they did not belong, against the East, to which they did.
