Fletch Harrison Bergeron

I was just having a clean out of books on my shelf when I came across an old science fiction anthology that I must have had since high school or even primary school. I picked it up and read the first story, 'Harrison Bergeron' by Kurt Vonnegut. I can't remember reading it before but it was very interesting. Perhaps some have read it before.

It starts out -
THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren’t only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way.

In the story, if you are handsome you are made to wear a mask, or if you are intelligent you are given some kind of handicap by the 'United States Handicapper General' so that no one is better than anyone else. Of course, it got me started thinking about Communism and Socialism and the other 'isms'.

I wonder what HC's perfect world would look like?

Anyway, I found the story on line and you can read it HERE
