At this point governments normally start a war

I was reading in The Poisoned Stream that a war was started in order to distract the German population from the scandals besieging the government of time. It is at this point that we can be grateful that the NZ military capacity has been run down to such an extent that any such scheme would not even be contemplated.

  1. Sounds a bit old fashioned.

These days you don't start a war to divert the populace.. you demonise a small sector of the people like er, the Exclusive Brethren.
Using the EBs as a pretext, you slip in an Electoral Finance Bill that removes nearly all political opposition in the eleven months prior to election, tune up all Govt depts to sell your message in that time free of charge and outside electoral spending limits and sack any public servants who might make a fuss.

Simple eh? But it could only happen in a place like Nazi Germany.

  2. It has been refreshing to see the MSM take up the cudgels on the DBP affair. It reminded me a little of the election scandal.

Now I hope they really go the govt on their obvious desire to use the state service as an extension to their ministerial staff. Taken to its logical conclusion, they could use the state apparatus to destroy any perceived enemy. Scary.
