Proposed cyber bullying legislation

Is this a more sophisticated version of "hate speech legislation"? First pass same-sex marriage and then this? Will this blog's Catholic position on homosexuality be considered cyber bullying? Could be ominous times ahead.

David Farrar has reservations as well.

It'll all be in the interpretation of the 10 principles, which depends of the point of view of the person interpreting.

Why the heck do we have to lead the world on this?

  1. Yeah, if you had to nominate one thing NZ legislation really is lacking right now, how many of us would have said that people being rude on the internet needed to become a criminal offence?

  2. Lucia, that's the first thing I thought when I saw the news as well. Said to another person watching that this will be used to gag people or convict them based on hate speech.

  3. How long before robust criticism of politicians is classed as "bullying"?

  4. Look, do we need this?

    1. Offensive speech should be allowed, because all meaningful speech will offend. Consider Ratzinger's erudite sermon quoting a Byzantine emperor -- set off riots among the Islamists.

    2. If people are harassing and setting up consipiracies to harass or attack or rob then the social media trail will give evidence of mens rea. We have laws about that already.

The risk is that when I blog on Judges or Genesis and discuss the exegesis (or worse, Romans 1) I will be in front of the beak for hate speech.

There is a word for this and it is fascism.

  5. Absolutely, this is only the beginning; our fascist liberal friends want to silence all dissenters.
