Friday Night Free For All

In just 5 hours, at 6:00pm NZT the FNFFA will officially commence. Prepare your comment in advance. Review your movie. Finish your book. Pre-purchase your alcoholic beverages and check there is gas in the BBQ.

Here's my comment: Howdy folks. Out tonight, might check-in later.

And that, my friends was totally unrehearsed, ad-libbed on the spot. With several hours notice, I'm sure you will all be able to attain the same quality and depth. In fact, I wont be at all surprised if this comment can be bettered. Some of you really are that good, so don't be shy.

  5. Indeed - I note that TV3 chose not to quote anyone, whereas TV1 displayed a poster and quoted Christine Rankin.

I also note that TV1 replayed the "finger" that Ron Mark gave as part of their item on Wilson.

  7. Yeah, well done for getting the numbers for a referendum. The Children’s Commissioner says your petition is misleading.

“The groups behind this petition have been gathering signatures at public events around New Zealand, luring people in with such statements as ‘do you want to stop child abuse?’,” Dr Kiro said.

The media release was posted on scoop just before 5 today.

  8. The Children's Commissioner is a nasty social engineer, who is detrimental to a balanced society.

Kids need stability from the present regime of hateful family wreckers.

  9. I've consistently heard that getting people to sign has all the difficulty of giving a thirsty man water.

    Seriously.

  10. Unfortunately, child abuse will continue to get worse the longer the focus is on smacking.

  11. Evening all.

How's that for a witty opener?

  13. Nice execution George. And I always appreciate the signoff name on an anonymous comment. Sheer genius.

  14. Have you seen the latest Seagal movie? He must be getting on a bit. Normally his Dad is killed and he seeks revenge. This time his son is killed and he seeks revenge. The sequel will be that his Great Grandson is killed and he seeks revenge.

I found the ultimate Seagal/Van Damme movie clip. What a team. I'll dig it up later, it's a hoot.

Oh well, I'm lurking down town - nowhere near my computer. Just hacked some-one's gear sitting near me. Better log out before they get back with the drinks. After I initiate this 30GB download.

And what could possibly be 30GB I hear you ask? Looks like a Vista service pack from here....

  17. Serendipitously, regarding OSs, I have just bought the $600 Acer notebook from Dick Smith. It's loaded with Ubuntu linux. It connected to my internet wifi immediately and is playing DVDs, spreadsheeting, emailing etc happily (i.e. smooth and easy peasy)

Like me you may have tried linux in the past and found it lacked certain drivers and that you hit a wall somewhere. Well, I can tell you now that Ubuntu 7.1 is as user friendly as what you are already familiar with. Moreover, most software you, as a domestic user, will ever dream of is default, i.e. already installed, AND IT IS FREE.

I have defended Windows in the past, usually on price point, but seeing this version of Ubuntu linux I realize that the hoary Mac vs PC debate is dead. DEAD, dead, dead, but it doesn't know it yet... market momentum and consumer inertia will persist...
Note that this current act of blogging doesn't care what machine you use. Indeed, most of you computer use is now "web 2.0" based. Think facebook, netvibes, digg, blogger, myspace, google earth, gmail, yahoo etc etc.
It doesn't matter whether you have Windows or Mac OS, both business models of Miscrosoft Corp. and Apple Corp. aim to lock you into proprietary systems.

In case you think linux is low tech...
Go to youtube and search for linux + beryl or linux + emerald. Those desktop effects such as the spinning desktops cube are default!!
I strongly urge you to watch either of these vids:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ&feature=related
    or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD7QraljRfM&feature=related

Note that these video posts are over a year old making them contemporary with Vista and Mac OS Leopard.
You should agree that in comparison to the linux emerald desktop both Mac and Vista's desktop features are primitive embarrassments!

If you are considering a new notebook seriously examine your requirements (i.e. are you really going to play Call of Duty 4 and Flight SimX on it?!) and consider the $600 Acer offered Dick Smith (not to be confused with the eee). Note Dell is also offering ubuntu, but not in NZ.

    I have repented.
Because of one specialist software title I am compelled to retain Windows. I am, however, cleaning out my workstation and rebuilding it as a virtual machine using vmware, ubuntu, and Vista – a weekend project.
The new linux with the hot emerald desktop is too powerful to ignore.

  18. Greg b,

My opening one-liner has been seriously trumped. I concede defeat and withdraw.

  19. ha, didn't mean to threadjack just that I've been stewing on that for a while.
Both Vista and Apple are consumer traps. The real innovation is in the hardware, e.g. Intel CPU and nVidia graphics.

There's so much power in a modern computer and it's been squandered as the established OSs slowly release expensive new versions and fluff them with golly-gosh marketing. It's called clever business but the trick is getting old fast.
I'd rather give my money to Intel and nVidia.
