Broken Windows and Tagged Walls

Stephen Franks is musing on a "broken windows" policy for policing in Wellington. It's just been kicked off in Christchurch. Youth crime climbs. We must get tough. Can't have broken windows around the place. Sends the wrong message. And heating isn't cheap either for that matter.

Broken Windows is apparently the more accurate coined term for the "zero tolerance" style policing programmes working reasonably well in a few American cities. I'm all in favour of Kiwi-izing these terms. Let's call it the Zero Tag policy perhaps?

Although, there was that recent story about the 21 year old tagger that got caught by the pub owner, who ended up tagging the tagger and the tagger's clothes, to the cheers of patrons.

Actually, I'm more amazed the publican wasn't thrown in jail for vigilante behaviour. What's NZ coming to, if we can defend our property without the state getting involved? Next, criminals might actually be locked up. Maybe we need some sort of zero tolerance programme just to make it clear? Oh, hang on. That's where we started.

But is it the right place to start? Maybe we should be advertising the need for parents to enforce discipline? Before the cops get involved. That might be a good place to start. Oh hang on, that was outlawed last year with the whole "smack is the same as violent assault and parents should be thrown in jail" thing.

Well, if a smack is absolutely guaranteed to lead to violent abuse, surely we've seen where time out leads? Let's ban time out.

I think I'll head down to the local mall and spray paint that across the entrance way sign. "Stephen Franks getting tough on crime, but lets ban time out". Oh hang on, that's probably considered political advertising. So, it's legal if I stick my address on the bottom and keep the damages under the spending limit? And if it's illegal, do we have enough police to enforce the policies?

Helen pledged to add 1000 Police to the force last election. I remember paying for the pledge cards. I'm wondering about the fine print. If Labour add 1000 police, but some of them are admin staff, and another 1500 leave the force, was the pledge fulfilled? What if we come up short? Do we need to get Clint Rickards back?

Isn't it amazing what we tolerate?

Sadly it is, most people have no idea what the hell is going on most of the time to know what exactly they're 'tolerating', too many are just too ignorant & lazy to care.
