Driving Technology Forward

Whilst Microsoft are trying to get people excited about Windows 7 and banging your fist on the screen to make it work...I'm just after the new 256GB Solid State Drives. Tired of waiting for Microsoft to make Windows boot faster, I'm moving to plan B.

These are a winner for any laptop - faster, smaller, lighter and less drain on the battery. I've seen a few of these hitting the market, and mass production is not far away. Samsung have just leapfrogged the current crop, and with an estimated reliable lifetime of 12+ years with this technology, it looks like the earlier problems of limited write cycles are contained. Great.
Samsung Electronics, the world's largest computer chip maker, said today it has developed a new solid state drive which is expected to replace hard disk drives in laptop computers.

Samsung said its 256-gigabyte solid state drive (SSD) for data storage is 2.4 times faster than traditional hard drives. The company plans to begin production of SSDs this year.

  1. I just bought a 1TB HDD, I intend it to be my last. Roll on solid state.

Read my lips: Ubuntu 8.04 and Firefox 3.

Ever notice that MS windows has a monopoly on laptops?
I mean to say, where can you buy a clean OS-free laptop?

  2. Greg, non-windows is on the cards for my test machines, but I'm stuck with at least one major Windows system for my primary job related purposes for the next year or two.

Although, I am making much more use of VMware, which allows me a lot easier access to testing a new O/S and software.

    in today's Herald.

$240million on IT in schools in 2005.
Most of the funding (61%) comes from the school and only 25% comes from "central funding".

The point is when this is paid for by fund-raising "cakes sales" why are schools wasting money by locking themselves into Microsoft and Apple licenses??

    Who is advising them?!
    Why are they so ignorant?
What is the IT expert at the school being paid for?
Don't these people have the internet??!

Using MS or Apple when you are cash-strapped is as sensible as refusing to use Wikipedia because you're still paying off Britannica.
    MS is Britannica!

If you're a school teacher and reading this download Ubuntu 8.04 or get a geek friend to do it for you.
This OS has a dedicated menu labeled "education" for goodness sake!

  4. I noticed Toshiba's R500 has a solid-state hard drive. Was very interested at the time as the hdd in my Portege tablet had just crapped out. "Do not move the computer while it is switched on," says the documentation (or something to that effect.) Yo wut? It's a f*cking Tablet PC! Why would you not be moving around while using it? Roll on solid state indeed...

  6. Was reading the email response below the Herald article and there is a comment by "Gandalf". Gandalf suggests that "Linux is good to learn on but then they can progress to windows in their final year." ROTFLMAO

Gandalf has it the wrong way around.
My Ubuntu desktop is far more sophisticated than Vista Ult.
It installed with greater ease than Vista Ult, hasn't "bricked" any hardware, doesn't loose HDDs or take "15 days" to copy 500GB, doesn't slow down Firefox, doesn't fall flat on it's face every 2 days etc, and has anyone's Vista worked properly since the service pack?

Ubuntu is so good and so simple to set up it's almost insulting more people don't use it.

Interestingly, because I'm freed up from expensive OS packages I have now bought more third party software than ever before, e.g. VMware.

Maybe Gandalf is a govt IT advisor or a principal.
