Why The Rainbow?

I note that St Matthews in the City has another billboard this year (which I won't bother posting an image of) which depicts the baby Jesus with a rainbow halo around his head, and (they say) begging the question of how do we know Jesus wasn't gay? It made me think: why is the rainbow now a "gay" sign?  I still take issue with the gay crowd trying to appropriate it is as their symbol. Why should they? What has a rainbow got to do with same-gender sexual conduct? Nothing really; in fact, in the Bible it is given as a symbol from God to his people that he will never destroy the Earth by flood again -

"God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations; I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.“It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud, and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. “When the bow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.” ~ Genesis 9: 12-17
Just like the enemy to take something that is God's symbol of peace between Himself and mankind and pervert it for his own use. Looks like they have got a lot of exposure. Even the Drudge report has a post on the billboard. I think we ought to take the rainbow back.

  1. Why not the rainbow? After all, just like the word gay, it does not belong exclusively to anyone group.

Of course, if you had any scientific understanding at all, you would know that rainbows far predated the myth of the Noachic flood. All that is needed for a rainbow is the right amount and angle of light to strike the right amount of rain drops.

And anyway, why would an all knowing god need a reminder? Is he that feeble minded?

How are you going to "take the rainbow back"? Put in a glass jar? Ban anyone other than catholics from seeing rainbows?

    just too funny,.

  2. LRO, if you're a Christian then you believe that God created everything. Science doesn't create anything; science only tries to explain the Creation that is already present. You and science can tell me how a rainbow works but ultimately, it is God that created it, just as he created all the other natural wonders in the world.

The "reminder" is not for God's sake, it is more for our sake.

As for 'taking the rainbow back", I hadn't planned on anything, but perhaps it's just a matter of Christians starting to use it themselves for their own purposes; in their art and events. The more that the rest of us use it, the less it will exclusively have a meaning for which it was not intended.

  3. Fletch, you may believe what you like about creation, but that doesn't change the science of rainbow production.

As there was rain and son before the noachic flood myth, then there would have been rainbows long before Noah. Or do you have an explanation as to why rainbows only magically appeared after this supposed flood?

You say The "reminder" is not for God's sake, it is more for our sake. and yet in the very biblical verses you quote in your original post we find and I will remember My covenant and When the bow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God , so it does seem as though god has memory issues.
