Forget tasers - every police man or woman needs a gun in order to protect themselves from NZ's increasingly dangerous criminals.

Methamphetamine production and distribution is a business in the hands of full-time, dangerous criminals.
ReplyDeleteIt beggars belief that police are expected to deal with them using the old unarmed, half-trained methods of the past.
Arming these cops may certainly have helped in this circumstance, but it wouldn't have stopped the crime. It would have meant a shootout, which would have been much better than a cold-blooded murder as the cop would have had a much better chance of surviving. These cops probably should have been armed. But we would have still had something horrible on the news this morning.
ReplyDeleteTo stop this sort of crime we need to tackle the actual cause of it. We need to promote families and require greater accountability from fathers, so children grow up with contact with their fathers and are less likely to look to gangs for role models and identity. In depriving gangs of young members in this way we would prevent an awful amount of crime.
Huh? Your cops are not armed? Good grief! Are they mad, don't tell me some birdbrain in authority thinks that taking their guns away makes life safer for them.
ReplyDeleteMK, NZ cops have traditionally not been armed. I remember the shock I felt when I stood next to an armed policeman in a shop in Oz - I was just not used to being that close to a person with a gun. There was a certain amount of pride in NZ over our cops not being armed at that time - the theory being that if the cops aren't armed, then the crims won't need to be either.
ReplyDeletePolice should not be allowed to carry arms unless citizens are allowed to carry arms. Otherwise we give them way too much power.
ReplyDeleteI think even KG would agree ;-)
Lol! He does, Ruth and I never thought we'd find ourselves in agreement about anything. :-)
ReplyDeleteI actually agree with Ruth on this one!
ReplyDeleteThis is a typical, and usual, knee jerk reaction.
ReplyDeleteLet's examine a possible scenario here:
1. Unidentified persons interfering with a car.
2. Owner of car has just got it back from crash repairers after car was stolen and crashed.
3.Owner has listened to talk back radio and "knows" police won't respond ina timely manner, and is still pissed off about car being previously stolen.
4. Owner challenges the unknown men interfering with his car; they, unwilling to blow their cover, run for cover.
5. This reinforces in the mind of the car owner that the men were up to no good, and so he determines to "sort them out".
Now, nothing in the forgoing is an attempt to excuse murder, becuase that is not my aim, and murder is what it is.
However, what would have happened had the police been in uniform and easilly identifiable as police?
Or if they had remained, and identified themselves?
We issue police with uniforms for a reason. So, instead of jumping on the cops need guns bandwagon, ask why our police sneak around out of uniform.
Then, ask why so much police time and money is wasted on enforcing stupid drug laws.
Legalising the majority of drugs would lead to an overall decrease in crime, especially crimes such as burglary. The savings made here could then be used to fund better treatment programmes for addicts.

ReplyDeletePolice are already armed, although it's kept on the quiet. However regardless of whether we arm the Police the People should be free to arm themselves and protect themselves and their property with deadly force if necessary. The People's right should be of no question, the question should always be with Government, i.e. what power do we give to the Government?
Of course the police should be armed. Of course they should not have to skulk around what they know is a drugs lab waiting for the right paperwork to be justified in acting rightly. The recognised authorities should always have all access to every high powered means of shredding the bad guys. That's just how it should work. The bad guys should be utterly too terrified to do anything.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately in New Zealand otherwise harmless people sulk about some imaginary breach of their "rights" at the mere mention of a gun. Get over yourselves! Sgt Don Wilkinson should be alive right now and two thugs should be lying in a morgue somewhere.
