Here's a case of real child abuse, where it's also obvious banning smacking wouldn't have prevented this, nor changed the attitudes behind this callous and inhumane attitude. So now that these people are caught, time to send a message to others on what "duty of care" means, and the severe punishments that could be leveled when caregivers (they weren't parents) are found not just to fail in their basic obligations, but to inflict such abuse in the first place.

Mr Coates said social workers who visited the three-bedroom Palmerston home - which housed 17 people - the day before the death found the child lying on the kitchen floor crying. When she was told to have a shower she struggled to walk and had to use the walls for support.I cannot understand how they could miss the seriousness of her condition.

Just sickening, as usual. What a horrible death, one can only but imagine the pain and misery suffered, by this young girl. obviously the foster parents were in it only for the money. Where are the checks and balances, and what does it say about society when not even the social workers or the school intervenes? I suppose the alleged foster 'parents' will also get four to six soft years, in a very comfortable prison, if at all. Anti-smacking bill is a sad, cruel joke, and I bet Australia implements it too, and pretends that it helps.
