Emily's List and Palin hatred

Miranda Devine revisits the gastric unease caused by Sarah Palin. Her SMH column is worth a quick scan. Devine identifies two sources of particular rancour towards Palin; firstly, adolescent green-eyed jealousy and secondly, an offence against the sacrament of abortion.

In attempting to understand the hatred pitched at Palin from many Australians, Devine notes that 75% of Labour party women in Australian parliaments are members of Emily's List. The US website of the group states, "EMILY's List members are dedicated to building a progressive America by electing pro-choice Democratic women to office" and goes on to say, "When women are involved in the political process, our democracy is truly representative. "

But only the right kind of woman, only if they are pro-choice and Democrats, or in the case of Australian members pro-choice and Labor. The common cause is pro-choice. Sarah Palin is neither Democrat nor pro-choice so even though she is a woman elected to office she is a non-person in the eyes of Emily's List members, 75% of the Australian female Labour representatives and many opinion leaders.

Miranda Devine continues...

There is an echo of bitchy high-school jealousy of the popular queen bee from the snarling, self-mutilating nerd and goths who vainly lusted after the cute boys she snared.

The consolation for the losers is that homecoming queens are meant to get married, get pregnant, get fat and lose their looks so the self-made strugglers such as Bernhard and Madonna can patronise them at school reunions. Palin, by having it all, has cheated. Not only was she Miss Wasilla 1984, but she married her childhood sweetheart, Todd Palin, kept her figure, had five attractive, seemingly well-adjusted children and was successful in her career.

If she made any sacrifices or compromises they were not apparent. And she had won the marriage jackpot: a hunky house-husband who is able to take a back seat without losing his cojones. She juggled home and family, even breast-feeding in the office, without any angst, middle-class welfare, or even bags under her eyes. How did that work?

Instead of lauding the aspirational quality of Palin's achievements, establishment feminists despised her for showing up their inadequacies.

Actually it's not even just being pro-choice, they demand that the person be pro-abortion. There is plenty of evidence that her haters despise her for allowing her son with Downs to be born. At the very least a lot of them are extremely sour about it, a 'gastric unease' if you will. :)

  2. I don'r hate Palin as a person.

BuT I do hate the idiocy she represents, the threat to science she represents and the throwback to the 1C she desires.

Its OK to speak in tongues, to believe in talking shrubs (no,not GWB)but it is not OK to undertake scientific research!

    The woman is an I D I O T!

Where does a lot of that earmark money end up anyway? […] You've heard about some of these pet projects they really don't make a whole lot of sense and sometimes these dollars go to projects that have little or nothing to do with the public good. Things like fruit fly research in Paris, France. I kid you not.

  3. She doesn't represent "this idiocy", that's just wishful thinking on your part.

In the same way, do we ascribe inane or morally unethical research to Obama?

There was a study done in Australia a few years ago where some science graduate received a whole pile of funding to cut the tails off a certain breed of possum, because of the way they stored fat. Anything to find an alternative to exercise and diet. Anything becomes possible because some glorify science.

Please try to tell me there is no such thing as junk science.

If you succeed, then I nominate Sarah Palin as the enemy of Junk Science. Finally, some-one who stands up only for quality. Go Sarah.

  4. The addition of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to the GOP presidential ticket has brought the creationism-evolution fight back into the news cycle, as voters learn more about her agnostic take on the subject: "Teach both," Palin has said. "You know, don’t be afraid of information."

    Creationism = junk science.

Yep, I agree with you, sarah Palin is the Queen of Junk Science.

  5. No, you don't agree with me, because I never said Sarah Palin was the Queen of Junk Science.

You've changed the topic and the quote. We were talking about funding for all sorts of junk science projects, and now you are raging against Creationism.

Maybe my point was well made. Another Helen Clark moment. "Time to move on."

  6. No zen, it was you he introduced junk science, I gave you an example of junk science.

Palin disses scientific research because she is a) scientifically illiterate and b) joe six pack dumb.

Research on fruit flies has led to better understanding of autism. Which VP candidate has a child with autism? That's right, the same one who thinks research on fruit flies is wasted $!

And boy, do you need to get out more if you think my little post was "raging against creationism:.

Guess you think Man and dinosaurs co-existed too.

  7. Found ZenTiger's blog on Daylight Savings Time in New Zealand while looking up when Daylight Savings time ends in California. I was impressed with the civil, good natured tone of the comments. I suppose it has something to do with the nature of the blog.

I was particularly interested in the comments on Sarah Palin. My wife and I are Republicans and attended a Palin rally in the Los Angeles area. Palin came across as a genuinely nice person.

It is interesting that Palin's critics don't attack her on her performance as the Governor of Alaska or credit her with being extraordinarily popular with Alaskans of both parties.

Unfortunately, such is the current state of U.S. politics. The great "Unifier" has pretty much divided the country and someone who done a good job running a state and actually has brought people together is the subject of unending petty invective. (No comment on the dinosaurs.)

So what it is like living in New Zealand? It looks like a wonderful country.

Oh, Palin's baby has Downs Syndrome, not autism.

    Regards,

You quoted Sarah Palin talking about junk science projects, I simply gave it a name.

I could debate the rest with you, but I think your main point is you are jumping on the Democrat bandwagon and going with the "Sarah Palin" is stupid campaign.

I don't see any value in debating this, and I very much she would be where she was today if she were as stupid as the liberals try to make out.

Guess you think Man and dinosaurs co-existed too.

Your guesses are spectacularly bad. It's not inspiring me to take your other opinions seriously.
