Virtual daughter thrives, real daughter dies

A Korean couple who met through an internet chat room neglected their baby daughter while they played an online game called Prius in internet cafes for up to 12 hours a day.

The hook in this game is a girl called Anima whom the player nurtures.

The living, neglected child died of malnutrition as her parents obsession with the game took over their lives.

It's a very sad world sometimes.

  1. You're right andrei. It is a very sad world.

    Nancy Brewster, age 7, died of untreated cancer becuase her parents were christian scientists.

    Emma Gough, age 22, Jehovah's witness, refused a blood transfusion after giving birth to twins. Children left motherless.

    Michael Bormer, age 4 days, died from a bleeding nose. His parents, end timers, didn't "believe in hospitals" so stuck a tissue up his nose and prayed while he bled to death.

    Antonio Campos, age 5 months, his mother looked for an alternative to the painful chemotherapy treatments he needed for cancer. She found a clinic using a energy medicine machine. Antonio died anyway.

    Frances Denoon, aged 28, visited a chiropractor to relieve some neck pain. On her second visit, "my world went into a dizzy spin" with nausea and loss of speech. The neck manipulation had caused a brain stem stroke.

    Cameron Ayres, age 6 months, born with a rare but treatable disorder, but his parents distrusted conventional medicine. A nurse/homeopath begged them to take him to a doctor, but they refused. He died.

    Lisane Manseua, age 12, diabetic. After consulting a crystal ball, a pendulum and an angel, a naturopath replaced Lisanne's insulin with a variety of natural remedies to "detoxify" her. She died only three days after beginning treatment.

    Isabella Denley, age 13 months, prescribed medications for her epilepsy. Instead of using them, her parents consulted an iridologist, an applied kinesiologist, a psychic and an osteopath. She was being treated purely with homeopathic medication when she died.

    Gloria Thomas, age 9 months, was diagnosed with eczema at four months. Her father, who taught and practiced homeopathy, treated her using that instead. She died of sepsis caused by broken skin due to her eczema.

    Javon Thompson, age 6 months, when he wouldn't say "amen" at mealtime, members of the One Mind Ministries where he lived concluded he was a "demon" and allegedly starved him to death. His body was found 2 years later in a suitcase in Philadelphia.

    Prof Paul Mirecki, age 55, after he announced plans to teach a course on intelligent design as mythology (which was approved by the school), he received much criticism. Two individuals followed him to breakfast one morning and pummelled him.

    Katie McCarron, age 3, influenced by those who believe childhood vaccines might cause autism, Katie's mother felt extreme guilt over vaccinating the autistic child. This led to a depression, and the death of the child at her mother's hands.

    And yet, whenever I critices alternative therapies, prayer healing, mystical water and all the other woo and mumbo jumbo that pervades this demon haunted world, people simply shug their shoulders and say "What's the harm?".

    Above are just a few of the examples of the harm.

  2. PS: I think this quote from Saint Thomas Aquinas is relevant, and I doubt you disagree!

  3. LRO, it appears you are arguing that holding a particular set of beliefs is dangerous and can lead to death of them or their loved ones.

    Are you going to now list all the people who have died from aids because of their lifestyle beliefs? It would be a longer list, and therefore make your point so much better, don't you think?

  4. BTW LRO, what is your opinion on the cases you outlined apart from "sad"?

    Is it towards "each to his own and the consequences be damned" or more towards "we really need to teach people to think like I do, because I wouldn't make such silly mistakes, or have such strange values", or is there another direction I've missed?

  5. LRO, and what about all the good Christian parents who do look after their children? I could list all of the people I know in my church here alone with thriving children.

    The cases you list sound like cults. There is nowhere I know that forbids medical treatment. Sure you pray for people but that doesn't preclude treatment by doctors.

    In The book of Ecclesiasticus (Wisdom of Sirach) Chapter 38 it says -

    Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential to you, and God it was who established his profession.
    From God the doctor has his wisdom, and the king provides for his sustenance.
    His knowledge makes the doctor distinguished, and gives him access to those in authority.
    God makes the earth yield healing herbs which the prudent man should not neglect;
    Was not the water sweetened by a twig that men might learn his power?
    He endows men with the knowledge to glory in his mighty works,
    Through which the doctor eases pain and the druggist prepares his medicines;
    Thus God's creative work continues without cease in its efficacy on the surface of the earth.
    My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to God, who will heal you:
    Flee wickedness; let your hands be just, cleanse your heart of every sin;
    Offer your sweet-smelling oblation and petition, a rich offering according to your means.
    Then give the doctor his place lest he leave; for you need him too.
    There are times that give him an advantage,
    and he too beseeches God That his diagnosis may be correct and his treatment bring about a cure.
    He who is a sinner toward his Maker will be defiant toward the doctor.

  6. Good point Fletch.

    I made a similar point in my first comment, which I then deleted!

    Thus my "PS: Aquinas" comment now appears first, and was meant to add to my first comment. No matter, it relates well to the point you made - there are many Christians who are comfortable with science (and Doctors) and Aquinas showed us such Wisdom 800 years ago, and your quote goes back even further, so this is not a new thing.

  7. Also, keep in mind that LRO is another Fugley incarnation. It will become all too obvious soon enough.

  8. IMF, at no time did I deny there were good christian parents. You need to get over your obsession with everything you disagree with being an attack on you and or your "deeply held beliefs".

    Zen, my list was simply to point out that the case andrei cited was not an isolated case, that there are a lot of very stupid people doing stupid things with serious consequences, and quite often the victims are those who cannot speak for themselves.
