I wonder what our grandparents would have made of this?

Justice Minister Simon Power is fast tracking new legislation creating some new offenses through Parliament.
The changes were originally intended to fall under a wider reform of the Crimes Act, but Power said he did not want to wait.
Why?

One of the new offenses is
to sexually groom a constable posing as a young person
Can you imagine trying to explain what this offense is to a world war 2 veteran just back from overseas? And when he had digested why this law was deemed necessary he may have thought,"is this the really world I was helping to create as I fought my way up through the mud of Italian Peninsula".

Actually I am a tad uncomfortable with this new offense - I know there are scuzzbags who use social media to try and seduce young people but having constables posing as a young person in order to catch these scuzzbags smells of entrapment.

My guess is most young people are way too smart to be taken in by these creeps and most of the conversations are creep to creep with neither being aware the other isn't what he purports to be.

But when the conversation becomes creep to constable well the creep is drawn into committing an offense, to wit - to sexually groom a constable posing as a young person,

I tell you its a sick old world out there and I don't really think this new bunch of laws will do much to make it better, I suppose it gives the impression of doing something though.

Another troublesome feature in the rushed package is a tightening of the laws governing Self Defense. Such things should be subject to much public scrutiny and debate before becoming law.

National is behaving more like the last unlamented Labour Government every day.

It's not an amusing subject, but that sentence raised a smile. Yes, I expect you're right, and there's a kind of poetic justice about it.

I think I need that explained to me as well, though what you've said in your post helped a lot. But by itself ... huh?

  3. Actually I think today's kids are still pretty clueless when it comes to managing risk, especially on the internet. They are very good at using the net, but they are still poor at judging safety and easy prey to the manipulations of adults.

So, for example, a kid might not give out their address or phone number, but they might say what school they attend and what sports they play and when and were they play the games. They will talk about going to the movies, and what they are going to see. It's pretty easy to take this information and work out where someone is going to be.

As well as that kids see so much sexually explicit media that their modesty is pretty much fried. An adult pervert posing as a teen comes across as edgy and hip when he talks about sexual matters and can groom kids from there. Teens on the net have often have no idea of privacy, they will happily post compromising photos without taking into account the long term effects.

Once I was in the changing room at QEII in Christchurch and a group of three young teenage girls in just their towels began taking photos of themselves to send to their boyfriends. They did this utterly unconcernedly - right there in the middle of the changing room. They had NO clue they were doing something improper, otherwise they wouldn't have done it so brazenly.

If they would take and send that photo in a public space, what are they doing in the privacy of their own rooms? And what photos are they receiving? Children are creating their own child porn now and there are youngsters who have been prosecuted for this.

  4. Indeed they are clueless Muerk and frequently come unstuck as with these Australian boys who thought it would be fun to rate how hot their female teachers are.

We live in a world which trivializes and objectifies people and this case and the perverts grooming children are symptoms of this.

I have in my head a post cooking on this matter.
