Which is why I'll be voting to get rid of it next November.
Update: pop over to Homepaddock and read Ele Ludemann's analysis of this, particularly her observations on the representation heartland New Zealand currently has in Parliament.
DAMIEN O'CONNOR: "Frankly, I didn't trust the system to give a straight-shooter a fair deal ... It is dominated by self-serving unionists and a gaggle of gays."Of course this is what MMP delivers, the party hierarchies decide who gets into parliament rather than the voters.

I lived in safe seats for one major party or the other the entire time I was able to vote under FPP, and the party hierarchies decided who got into Parliament in those seats. It's not a new feature introduced by MMP.
ReplyDeleteAndrei I share your dislike of MMP but am finding it difficult to decide which of the alternatives is better, or at least less worse.
ReplyDeletePM - in National it was, and still is, members in the electorate who select electorate candidates not the party hierarchy.

ReplyDeleteIndeed this is so PM, an a feature which all other things being equal delivers a far better quality of candidate and one beholden to his electorate, rather than head office.
I really enjoyed the heartburn Mike Minogue cause Robert Muldoon in his day.
It all ended when Trevor Mallard won the seat sadly.

ReplyDeleteWhich means your problem is with candidate selection processes rather than MMP.
Well yes to some extent but my real issue is the unelectable dross who are virtually guaranteed a seat because they are in good with part bosses.
ReplyDeleteAnd we can't get rid of them. If you have a deadshit electorate MP you get the satisfaction of voting them out. Forcing them to find a real job, but with MMP they might loose their seat but they end up back in Parliament anyway, Like that lamentable fellow Darren Hughes.
