Under the headline "Miss USA runner-up sparks gay rights row" stuff reports
Surely the last thing Miss California wanted to do was stir controversy. She got thrown a curve ball when "gay pageant judge and celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton" asked her the question.
Call me unreasonable but any "gay rights row" that has been "sparked" was surely down so by "gay pageant judge and celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton" who had every intention of doing just that when he asked the question.
And for the most part the media has gone along with his agenda.
What a nasty piece of work he must be.

The runner-up to Miss USA has stirred controversy at this year's beauty pageant by saying she did not believe in gay marriage.
Miss California’s comments at Sunday's pageant sparked outrage, with some audience members going head-to-head with supporters after the show.

A brave person for answering according to her conscience.
ReplyDeleteGood on her. shows what a twat that Hilton is.
ReplyDeleteI see phrases such as "Beauty Queen argues against gay marriage", which is reframing the point.
ReplyDelete"Beauty Queen asked for an honest opinion" might be more apt.
But I agree, the answer was no more controversial than the question. The question was certainly more mischievous.
She's one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen, in every way. Perez Hilton (which can't be his real name, so there's a clue) must have been insane with jealousy, so he set her up with the question. What the hell is a homosexual prat doing judging a real FEMALE beauty contest in the first place ?!
ReplyDeleteI thought (Miss California) Carrie Prejean's answer was utterly hilarious :) And apparently a judge has said her 'wrong' answer cost her the crown. Ouch.
ReplyDeleteHilton was almost certainly trying to 'out' California after the Prop 8 debate - to embarrass the state by their beauty queen having a different view (which would be painted as the more tolerant views of Californian youth). No wonder he spat the dummy when his curve ball got hit for a home run....hehe
It does raise a very interesting question about the beauty pageants though - to avoid accusations of sexism and objectification of women, the pageants claim to be contests of 'inner beauty' also, hence the questions about the contestants views on world affairs and bunny rabbits.
But asking pageant contestants 'values' questions raises the question about what values are the 'right' answers? Are the contestants supposed to embody values typical of the nation (or wider humanity)? But what about the issues - like gay marriage - where a nation or all humanity are split? Or do the pageants just want the contestants to lie about their real views?
I'm probably over-analysing this - I suspect the pageants just want to make coin out of guys oggling the contestants breasts. Sigh.
