n the days when Helen Clark ruled over the land from her perch on the the ninth floor of the Beehive, there dwelt throughout her realm a group of bloggers whose posts congregated at the fabled "Sir Humphrey's". And fine and marvelous blog it was, so well patronized that at times it exceeded its monthly bandwidth allowance and would go offline for a while.
Amongst the authors of that blog were two authors who scribe here today, Lucyna and Zen.
Alas nothing lasts forever and so it was with Sir Humphrey's, which eventually succumbed one last time never to return. Gone forever, now only a piece of New Zealand's blogospheric history.
Much was lost with the demise of Sir Humphreys, several years worth of posts from 10 authors disappeared into the nth dimension of hyper-cyber space, never to be seen again. For some, possibly many, this was a mercy, for others though posterity has surely been robbed. But the products of blogging are by their very nature are ephemeral, so perhaps we needn't mourn too much for poor old Sir Humphrey and the long lost posts.
And from the ashes of Sir Humphrey two new blogs arose. No Minister - absorbing authors of libertarian leanings, for the most part, and for those with a more conservative bent, the one you are reading now.
Now all this time Helen Clark was still reigning over the land from her eyrie on the ninth floor. Watching over the misdeeds of her underlings as her government self destructed. Without any trace of embarrassment it seems.
Days of drama but I, a fellow alumni of Sir Humphreys, posted not a word for many months during this period, despite my fine home at TBR. A place where I had resided since before Sir Humphrey's sad demise.
Realistically the vicissitudes of life were leading to change, not only in my priorities but also a new outlook on life was emerging during my hiatus from blogging. Tough times bring new perspectives sometimes.
Eventually I concluded my blogging days had come to a close. But once a blogger always a blogger I suppose and when Zen suggested that I post here from time to time, I gave the matter due consideration.
I finally concluded that I would enjoy the challenge, strike out in a slightly different direction and climb aboard. And here I am. And this is my first post in my new home. My values are the same, unashamedly Christian and conservative. I hope to present them to you, the blog consumer, in ways that will entertain and inform in the hope that we all may contribute to a better, happier and more functional society for our children to inherit.
For that surely is the point of what we do, a point lost on many of our compatriots it seems, with their constant revision of societal structures in ways that undermine the core values that hold us together as a people and do not, despite claims to the contrary, advance the cause of human welfare and happiness.
So let us continue to discuss matters of importance to our well being in a rational and civilized manner and perhaps we will, in part, achieve that which we all want - a a more contented and prosperous society where all who strive can achieve their goals.
So, what happened to the Wicked With of the West in her eyrie? I heard she wass deposed by wicked Prince John....
ReplyDeleteI believe she followed the yellow brick road, to visit the Wizard of Un.
ReplyDeleteWelcome aboard Andrei!
And this is my first post in my new home.
ReplyDeleteHere's to plenty more to follow. Great to see you back blogging again, Andrei.
Good to see you here, Andrei!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, Andrei. You have been missed.
ReplyDeleteJT
Yay, Andrei!
ReplyDeleteWelcome aboard. :)
Hey - nice to see you over here!
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you back Andrei.
ReplyDeleteWhat's happening with TBR?
Iain looks like he will be busy with his new book.
Hi Andrei, I recall criticising the announcement you would be joining Sir Humphrey's and then admitting I was wrong (with hindsight) when you announced you were leaving Sir Humphrey's for TBR. I never felt comfortable visiting TBR much, so good to see you are back, at NZC.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Seán.
PS Whatever did happen to Antarctic Lemur, the life and soul of Sir Humphrey's? Did he join a monastery or is he blogging under a new pseudonym?
ReplyDeleteAll attempts to contact him failed, which was a pity. I always worry when bloggers disappear because it could be some-one that was in a car accident, and we'd never really know, which would be a tragedy.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, it's nothing so dramatic, and AL just lost interest and got stuck in with his work (which was taking more and more of his time).
If he's taken on a new handle, I haven't recognised it.
Welcome Andrei and congrats to NZC for giving you a home.
ReplyDeleteNow, Al was the best blogger in NZ for a while. The downside was he 'owned' the blog so that all the material that was there went to waste when he 'disappeared'. Adolf met him just as he was 'disappearing' but he decided he didn't want to meet anyone else. He said his name was 'Ed' but that's doubtful.
I have a feeling he still lurks on the 'sphere and posts under a pseudonym but I can't prove it so to give the pseudonym away would be silly. I have a feeling he had a mission to bring down Clark and the Ninth Floor and when it failed in 2005 (just) he thought it was time to move on.
Shame really because this is all about giving what you can when you can and he would still be the best I think even if he did it part time.
Welcome Andrei! :)
ReplyDeleteZen, Gooner - thanks for the info on AL. Does seem strange to disappear completely since he was practically a full time blogger. Surely he could have handed over the admin to one of the other contributors if he wanted a break for a while...? I always thought the format of SirH's was the best (and still would be). Of course, can't always say the same of the content...but then the varied views make it interesting.
