JERUSALEM – Jews who arrived last night to pray at Joseph's Tomb – Judaism's third holiest site – were stunned to learn the structure had been vandalized, with the headstone smashed in and swastikas painted on the walls.
"Only barbarians could do such things. People who pathologically disgrace such a holy place don't deserve to be called human beings," said Gershon Mesika, head of the Jewish regional council in the West Bank.
Joseph's Tomb is the believed burial place of the biblical patriarch Joseph, the son of Jacob who was sold by his brothers into slavery and later became viceroy of Egypt. Following repeated Palestinian attacks, Israel in October 2000 unilaterally retreated from Joseph's Tomb and, with very few exceptions, banned Jews from returning to the site purportedly for security reasons. The tomb area is now controlled entirely by the Palestinians.
I wonder if this act of vandalism is connected to the UN Racism Conference. Emboldened by Ahmadinejad denouncing Israel as "the most cruel and repressive racist regime." Yet, by using swastikas, the barbarians show their profound ignorance and instead position themselves firmly on the side of evil.
I really, really, really dislike people who vandalise historical sites.

I'm glad you posted this Lucyna. Had it been Zen, I would have suspected satire at work...
ReplyDeleteSad if true, but bizarre contradictions abound. The state of Israel has "with very few exceptions, banned Jews from returning to the site" of Joseph's tomb, yet a bunch of people can amble up to pray? Guess they must have been the exceptions.
And the irony of Gershon Masika - "People who pathologically disgrace such a holy place [by painting it with swastikas - to depict the Israelis as Nazis] don't deserve to be called human beings". It's easier to bomb them if we don't consider them human...
And why would the 'barbarians' (at the door presumably) be 'profoundly ignorant' and 'on the side of evil' by using swastikas? Perhaps they consider the Zionist invasion & occupation of Palestine, and Israeli efforts to eliminate a functioning Palestinian society - not to mention their lives - to be genocide? It fits the definition.
I really, really, really, dislike it when people vandalise historic or religious sites too, but I guess the Palestinians feel the same way about their mosques that got bombed by the Israelis in Gaza this year, huh?
P.S. I guess the NZ police don't share our concern for historic/religious memorials - they gave Fr Gerard Burns diversion over the Rabin memorial demo, which they don't do if they really want a conviction.
