Carter's "Gay" Excuse

[UPDATE] oh Andrei beat me to it!

Oh, I really couldn't believe this in today's Herald.

MP Chris Carter is saying that the media is only focused on his spending because he is gay.
"Why was there no interest in any other minister taking their partner with them, only me? Why should that be?" he said yesterday.

"The only conclusion that I can draw from that is it's because I'm gay, and that if I was a heterosexual minister taking my husband or wife with me, it would be of no interest."
If ever there was a case of using one's "orientation" as a kind of reverse defence, then this is it..

  1. MP Chris Carter has emerged as the big spender, clocking up more than $200,000 in six months.

His spending, which was twice as much as the average Labour cabinet minister, included $83,000 on international travel, $83,000 travelling in limos, taxis and rental cars, $23,000 on domestic air fares and about $20,000 on accommodation.

That despite Carter being the MP of a small urban electorate and holding the education portfolio, not normally associated with international travel.

  3. Homosexuals can be legally declared "a couple" by a Civil Union, since 2004, making marriage, civil unions and de facto relationships largely the same in the eyes of the law.
