Changing the smacking law would derail parliament!

On NewsTalkZB this morning, John Key said that if they changed the smacking law, it would "Derail Parliament."

Derail Parliament???

Unbelievable!

Key was definitely on the back foot this morning. The radio host really pressed him on why he couldn't change the law, saying he had the numbers, he could change the law by lunchtime. Ok then, by 3 o'clock. But this was an explosive issue, people opposed changing the law...

Who? What people? John Key wouldn't say.

The interview was priceless.

Comments

  1. National could have saved themselves a whole pile of grief if they had voted against this law in the first place.

  2. I wish I'd heard that! Hopefully, someone will have it on record.

  3. KG,

They'll put it up on the NewsTalkZB site eventually. Maybe tomorrow. I'll link to it then.

    Andrei,

I agree. Though I would like to know who those people are that John Key is afraid of. Helen, maybe?

  4. Hmmmm, looks like it could be in the Week on Demand section. The interview was before 8am, at about 7:40 or 7:45 onwards, if anyone has the time to find it.

  5. Actually, the interview is most likely on the Wellington week on demand page.

  7. Now, that was a real eye-opener...
88% of those who voted don't agree with the law, yet Key claims that changing or dumping it would be 'explosive'! from whence would come this 'explosion' and why the hell would he care, given the numbers?

  8. Let's remember two things:
    1) National helped get this law passed.
    2) Key supported Clark's U.N. job.

So, could the 'explosion' be from the U.N.?

  9. I'm just going through listening to the interview again, and typing it out, word for word.

    It's just pure gold.

Key is not confused, he knows what he's doing. He doesn't want to change the law, and will use any means necessary to make sure that will continue to be the case.
