When is a protest not a protest? When it becomes a movement. Have you heard about the 8/28 (August 28) Restoring Honor event in Washington DC being organised by Glenn Beck? He's hoping for a massive turnout, no signs, no protest, no politics, just a statement from the people by the people, for the people kind of thing. Maybe it will be harder for the Obama administration to write it off in the same way the Tea Party events were downplayed? I've also seen reference to 9/12 as a theme, I guess to symbolize taking a step forward after 9/11.
So expect the air to be filled with patriotic songs (such as the one below) as people sit amongst the cherry trees down around the Lincoln Memorial. Here's a piece of trivia: we all know that the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France (dedicated in 1886), but did you know 3,000 cherry trees were gifted to Washington DC and America by Japan in 1912?
I have fond memories of sitting amongst these trees in full blossom, and it's absolutely beautiful.

'ommmmm,' Zen.
ReplyDeleteFair point. I've added some context to the original you-tube clip. Brought back memories of a little bit of time in Washington DC.
ReplyDeleteThe Smithsonian...awesome.
Aha.
ReplyDeleteWe sat among those same cherry tress at the Jefferson Memorial this past Sunday to picnic, watch the fireworks and generally celebrate America's birthday. It is a beautiful place and I hope you get to come back for a visit.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. That has to be one of the best locations ever to celebrate the 4th of July.
