I wonder who really undermined Copenhagen?

Sir David King, erstwhile chief scientific advisor to tony Blair, reckons the Climategate E-Mail hack was "a co-ordinated intelligence operation" designed to destabilize Copenhagen.
King suggested the email leaks were deliberately designed to destabilise Copenhagen and he dismissed the idea that it was a run-of-the-mill hacking. It was done by a team of skilled professionals, either on behalf of a foreign Government or at the behest of anti-climate-change lobbyists in the United States, he said.

"A very clever nerd can cause a great deal of disruption and obviously make intelligence services very nervous, but a sophisticated intelligence operation is capable of yielding the sort of results we've seen here," King said.
Anyway there is lots of lovely speculation in this Independent article, carried by the Herald this morning. as to who was behind it and their motivations.

But applying the principal of Occam's razor the most likely source of this exposure is not foreign intelligence services nor a sinister cabal of Texan oilmen but rather a disillusioned IT guy within the Climate Research center itself. Someone with the access, time and the technical know how to pull this off.

And that is one scenario that is not considered by Sir David King - I wonder why?

  1. lolol! I'm just putting a post together on this Andrei and I noticed you beat to me to it.

King blames everybody except the "eeevil joos" when all indications are that it was a leak, not a hack. In fact the BBC had been offered a lot of the material months before and declined to run the story and there's a good case to be made that the leaker took an alternative route to publicise the scam.

  2. Perhaps King's most hilarious statement is that a nerd hacker wouldn't have had the skills to pull this off--despite the fact that nerds have cracked NASA, the CIA and FBI files.
If King was the U.K.'s chief science advisor, that place is in more trouble than I thought.

  3. And of course the BBC declined to run the story. It's staff super fund is heavily invested in carbon trading. How remarkable!

  4. And on the other side - what does he call a timed release (ie on the eve of Copenhagen) by the EPA to announce they are declaring CO2 a pollutant and can then take "action" on it without having to have congress ratify or block their actions:

Obama and crew will not wait for the outcome of Copenhagen or the passage of the Waxman-Markey climate bill, predicted for 2010 at the earliest. Obama will declare carbon dioxide a dangerous pollutant this week.

Obama will trek to Copenhagen on December 18 and attempt to convince the one-worlders and their cult of green that he is serious about the climate change agenda.

The Environmental Protection Agency has declared carbon dioxide dangerous and this will probably result in the government requiring businesses that emit carbon dioxide and five other “greenhouse gases” to make costly changes in machinery to reduce emissions. Congress need not be consulted and no law need be enacted.

An EPA “endangerment finding” would allow the federal agency to use the federal Clean Air Act to regulate carbon-dioxide emissions.

Sounds like a co-ordinated operation designed to validate the Copenhagen conference and enable Obama to act without involving Congress.

  5. But that's Gaia sanctioned timing, Zen!
