Has God cursed Haiti?

Pat Robertson seems to suggest so
Haiti is one of the poorest nations in the world, the poorest by far in the Caribbean. And it is a sad fact of life that in any disaster the poor will suffer more than the wealthy. But people are not poor because they are cursed by God - indeed the Beatitudes suggest just the converse in fact
20 Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said:
“ Blessed are you poor,
For yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
For you shall be filled.
Blessed are you who weep now,
For you shall laugh.
22 Blessed are you when men hate you,
And when they exclude you,
And revile you, and cast out your name as evil,
For the Son of Man’s sake.
23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy!
For indeed your reward is great in heaven,
For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.
The reasons why disasters overwhelm Nations or individuals for that matter is one of the great questions of Theology and one not amenable to sound bites on TV but Pat Robertson is not even close with his suggestion - one which doesn't explain why the Roman Catholic archbishop of Port-au-Prince, Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot, is included amongst the victims.

  1. It seems Pat Robertson has clarified (although I've now lost the link): God was not responsible for this earthquake, it simply reflects the ongoing curse (something to do with a deal with the devil) after the slave rebellion in 1991.

Judging by the treatment of slaves from the French, it's some of the French that deserve the curse.

  2. So Robertson's found a way to make himself sound even more idiotically superstitious than before, and make himself sound racist at the same time? He's quite a bloke...

    NB: should be 1791!

  3. Robertson said something stupid.

In other news, the sun came up today.
